Acupuncture (latin acus= needle, pungere= to prick) is the oldest system of medicine known to mankind. The origin of Acupuncture is still a mystery but generally believed that it was being practiced as far back as Stone Age in China. The rudimentary form of acupuncture has been in existence in many parts of the world like Brazil, India, Egypt, Japan, Sri Lanka and South Africa.
The origin of Acupuncture & Moxibustion is purely accidental in the prehistoric age of China. It is assumed that while warming themselves by the fire in a cave, people in ancient times accidentally found relief or disappearance of certain pain or illness when definite areas the skin were subjected to burning. A sick person who suffered for a long time from renal pains may have perceived that after being injured in foot in the course of an accident, the shed blood relieved him from all his pains: Acupuncture & Moxibustion had been born. In the Paleolithic age the Chinese forefathers used to treat pains with needles of carved flint, their experience being transmitted orally to their descendants until the "Age of War" by which time Acupuncture was already very prevalent.
